The Mount Rainier Vol. Fire Dept., is one of the three original volunteer corporations assigned to the Bunker Hill Fire Station. The content of this web site is intended to express the views, activities and operations of the Mount Rainier Volunteer Fire Department only.

Family viewing will be 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM
Public viewing will be 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
A funeral Mass will follow the viewings at 12:00 PM

Viewings and funeral Mass will be held at St. Edwards the Confessor Church, 1940 Mitchellville Rd, Bowie, MD 20716. Due to Covid restrictions, attendance in the church is limited to 100 people, masks and social distancing will be followed.

Following mass there will be a funeral procession to Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Rd., Brentwood, MD 20722.

Past Chief and Life member Robert G. (Chief) Mutchler passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 30, 2021. He is on his way to be reunited with his wife Pat, his sons Paul, George and Floyd, and with the rest of his brothers and sisters. No arrangements have been made as of this time. As soon as they are they will be posted.

Services for Janet Fisher will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 1200 hrs. Services will be held and St. Luke Catholic Church, 9903 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, MD 21842. Due to the covid restrictions, the service will be limited to the first 100 people.

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of past member Janet Fisher. Janet battled a long and courageous fight with cancer. She is the wife of Past Chief John E Fisher III, and mother of our current Chief Jason Fisher. More information and any service information will be posted as soon as it is available. Please keep the Fisher family in your thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

Members spent several hours today getting Santa's ride ready for his tour of Mount Rainier on Wednesday.

After 17 years, working with old donated and used furniture, we are almost finished with the remodeling of our office in the Bunker Hill Fire Station. The painting is complete and the new flooring has been installed. New furniture is due in in a couple of weeks and we are looking forward to having an updated office to work in.

Painting and new flooring was also done in our two dorm rooms. Once the office is complete we will be furnishing the dorm rooms with new furniture. Hopefully that will help us find a couple of live in members to occupy the rooms.

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY FROM FIRE CHIEF TIFFANY GREEN

To the Residents of Prince George’s County,

The Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department has been working in conjunction with our County Executive, Angela Alsobrooks, and all County leaders and the agencies they serve, as we all closely monitor and respond to the COVID-19 situation in our communities.

Your PGFD/EMS providers are responding to all 911 calls for service. What you might notice is that all of our personnel are wearing surgical masks, however, if, and, when necessary, they might be wearing personal protective equipment like gowns, masks, and goggles. From the moment you call 911 to the moment our units arrive on scene, you may find that you are being asked more questions than usual. Please help us provide the best and safest service possible by answering those questions to the best of your ability. All of these steps are critical to ensure the safety of our providers, the continual operation of our services, and the health and well-being of our residents. Also, as a reminder, if you have questions about COVID-19, please do not call 911. The Prince George’s County Health Department has set up a hotline, which you can call with any questions you may have. The number is 301-883-6627.

Our Department, including all of our career and volunteer firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs, is taking every precaution to take care of you and to take care of our members so we can best mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution, sixteen of our members are currently being self-quarantined and are self-monitoring. That number will continue to fluctuate in the coming days. We are in close consultation with the Prince George’s County Department of Health on every call where we come in contact with a patient who is exhibiting signs or symptoms similar to that of COVID-19. Depending on the nature of the individual situation, we may ask a member to self-monitor, like routinely checking their temperature or we may ask them to self-quarantine, if circumstances demand. Additionally, we are cleaning and disinfecting our stations, our equipment, and our vehicles in accordance with current federal, state, and local recommendations. We are routinely checking all of our first responders’ temperatures as an additional layer of protection and safety and we decontaminate our patient transport vehicles per protocols. Again, these steps are out of an abundance of caution to ensure the well-being of our members and the community. For Fire, Rescue, and EMS Departments across our nation, this is the new normal.

Please rest assured that your Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is working for you while ensuring the safety of the men and women who have stepped up to serve you. I am very proud of the work they do. I thank them for their service and I thank our County residents as we all work together to safely navigate through this developing situation.

Hall of Fame Induction

On Thursday, September 26th, at the County Association meeting held at the Accokeek Vol. Fire Dept., Past Chief and Life Member Robert G. Mutchler was inducted into the Prince Georges County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association Hall Of Fame. Members of the department and his family were all on hand to help celebrate the occasion. Death Notification

We are saddened to report the death of Edward "Ed" Mutchler. Ed is a Life Member of the Cottage City - Colmar Manor Volunteer Fire Company, Company 2 and a current member of the Brentwood VFD. Ed is also a past Mayor of the Town of Colmar Manor where he has lived for 70+ years. Ed is survived by his wife Mary of 71 years. The Officers and Members of the Mount Rainier Volunteer Fire Department wish to convey to Ed's family our heartfelt condolences in their time of grief.

Ed is also a veteran of World War II, and in 2016 Ed was honored along with some of his veteran brothers and sister at the National Memorial Day Concert on the mall in Washington, DC, hosted by Gary Sinise for their participation in the Anzio Beachhead battle of World War II. Bunker Hill VFRC vs Prince Georges County & Brentwood VFD

VICTORY!

When this lawsuit was originally filed, the Bunker Hill Vol. Fire & Rescue Co. Inc. was the only 501(c)(3) corporation in the Bunker Hill Fire Station. And even with that fact, in December of 2014 the Fire Commission voted to recognize the Brentwood VFD as the sole legal authority in the Bunker Hill Fire Station. Basically shutting out and cutting off the Bunker Hill Vol. Fire & Rescue Co. Inc.

At that December 2014 Fire Commission meeting, then, Vice Chairman William King made the motion to recognize the Brentwood VFD (whom his son Steven was the President) as the sole legal authority in the Bunker Hill Station. Then, with no discussion on the motion, it passed by the full Fire Commission. Subsequently, at a deposition of William King claimed, he did this because he could get in touch with his son easier than anyone from Bunker Hill and that he had no legal authority to do so.

At the time of the original filling we were requesting to be named the sole legal authority in the Bunker Hill Station since we were the only authorized 501(c)(3) corporation in the station. But since the filling of the lawsuit we were informed that Brentwood had regained their 501(c)(3) status which changed the requested remedy we were seeking.

After learning of Brentwood’s 501(c)(3) status, we simply were requesting our recognition as a volunteer fire department be returned and and that we be treated as any other volunteer corporation in Prince Georges County. The trial was held on Monday, February 4, 2019 in front of Judge Davies of the Prince Georges County Circuit Court and closing arguments were heard on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

On Friday, February 15, 2019 Judge Davies issued his Order And Opinion Of The Court which gave us the victory we were seeking.

The Judges Orders:

1 - Judge Davies declared NULL & VOID the decision of the Fire Commission in December 2014 recognizing the Brentwood VFD as the sole legal entity in the Bunker Hill Fire Station, saying it was “unauthorized and exceeded the Fire Commissions legal right”.

2 – The Bunker Hill Vol. Fire & Rescue Co. Inc. is a non-profit volunteer fire and rescue corporation providing fire and rescue services to the community in Prince Georges County as an instrumentality for the County, and are entitled to the rights and benefits as a non-profit volunteer fire and rescue corporation to the same extent as any other non-profit volunteer fire and rescue corporation in Prince Georges County.

3 – Bunker Hill has the right to submit directly to the Fire Commission requests for funding and that the Fire Commission is to review and assess the requests fairly and impartially.

4 – Bunker Hill has the right to submit requests for maintenance of our apparatus and that the Fire Commission is obligated to consider our requests to the same extent as other volunteer fire and rescue companies operating in the county.

5 – Bunker Hill has the right to recruit new members and that the Fire Commission shall process any and all applications. And that the Fire Commission shall review and consider such applications fairly and impartially.

6 – Bunker Hill has the right to request and obtain training and certification for its members.

7 – The LOSAP credits earned by the members of Bunker Hill are eligible for LOSAP credit and that Bunker Hill has the right to submit their LOSAP reports directly to the Fire Commission.

On Monday, February 4th our trial, The Bunker Hill Vol. Fire & Rescue Co. Inc vs Barksdale was held in front of Judge Davies in the Circuit Court of Prince Georges County. Closing arguments were given on Tuesday morning, February 5th and we are now awaiting for Judge Davies to issue his written ruling on the case. We are looking forward to hopefully be getting a favorable outcome.

Letter to municipalities from the Bunker Hill Vol. Fire & Rescue Co. Inc.

There have been a lot of things said to the town councils of our local municipalities by people not associated with our organization. We have basically let these comments go unanswered, until now. We can no longer sit back and let the misleading and false information about our corporation be spread without rebuttal. Attached is a letter we have sent to the 5 local municipalities that the Bunker Hill Fire Station serves. We are sharing this letter with the citizens to give them some incite of some of the things that are going on in the Bunker Hill Fire Station. More information about the failed consolidation of the Bunker Hill Fire Station will be coming in the near future. If you have any questions or concerns you can use the contact information in the letter, or you are welcome to attend one of our regularly scheduled corporation meetings. Past President Steven King of the Brentwood Vol. Fire Department has been officially charged with embezzling up to $100,000.00 from the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. King has already had his initial court appearance and plead not guilty to the charges. When contacted by a reporter concerning the embezzlement, the current President of the Brentwood Vol. Fire Department William Broadus, who was the Vice President at the time of the alleged embezzlement, declined to comment sighting a department policy prohibiting discussion of personnel matters or discipline.
